I have been challenged to a duel one time. Fortunately, due to my youth, I was not honor-bound to answer that challenge. An uncle in Kentucky challenged me to "Horse manure at twenty paces." But long ago, a challenge to a duel issued as a response to a perceived affront to one's honor was a thing between gentlemen that were considered social equals. The fact that these affairs were often illegal did not always prevent combatants and their supporters from meeting on a field of honor to settle matters.
