What Does It Mean to Be “the Ultimate Horror Hero”?

I recently learned that Bruce Campbell, the actor made famous in large part by his portrayal of Ash Williams in the Evil Dead horror films franchise, has been diagnosed with a treatable, but incurable cancer. It’s sad news, but he appears to be staying optimistic and perhaps even a little defiant in the face of such a scary diagnosis. I certainly wish him the best of luck in his cancer battle.
I have seen The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II and I have intended to watch more films in the franchise. I just haven’t gotten around to it. Perhaps now I will. I enjoyed the two films that I have seen.
The character of Ash Williams is certainly a beloved and iconic one. Matt Konopka speaks to the character’s appeal in his article, “‘Evil Dead’s Ash Williams Remains the Ultimate Horror Hero” (click first link below). As you can see from the screenshot below of his X post from earlier this week, Mr. Campbell himself has positive feelings concerning the role.
On a side note, given my interest in tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs), I found it particularly interesting to discover that Mr. Campbell did the foreword for the “Weird West” TTRPG, Deadlands (see third screenshot below). I did not know that and I find myself wondering if Mr. Campbell is one of a number of creative, artistic types that played or that continues to play TTRPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and Deadlands.
Again, here’s wishing Mr. Campbell the best of luck with his treatment and I hope that he enjoys many more good years with his family, friends, and fans. Be sure to check out the article and maybe take some time to enjoy his work.
