If you happen to encounter the person that broke your heart, it’s probably best if you can hang a friendly, sincere smile on your face. If he or she deliberately hurt you, it communicates that the experience ultimately didn’t destroy you or your capacity to find or to manufacture happiness for yourself. It can cause him or her to question just how effective his or her efforts to harm you really were. It demonstrates that whatever power that he or she once held over you is likely a distant memory. And whether it was deliberate or something less rooted in malice, it gives him or her something to think about if and when you ever cross his or her mind in the future. He or she might even question whether or not he or she made the right decision (it is admittedly kind of surreal when a recently remarried ex tells you that, “I think I made a mistake “). That’s a win.

So how do you find your sincere smile? While not easy, it is possible. Keep in mind that you and your happiness were clearly not a priority for this person, that he or she might have eventually broke your heart down the road had the relationship further blossomed, that you truly deserve to be happy, and that your ability to find happiness is not rooted in his or her ability to recognize that you are a “catch.”Even if he or she appears to be happy without you in his or her life, that doesn’t mean that he or she didn’t lose a good thing. Trust in that and move forward.
