The Little Voice That You Should Heed
Updated: Mar 11, 2025

We all likely get the wisdom found in this tweet from Maj Toure, founder of the gun rights and firearms education group Black Guns Matter. We have all likely had a friend or family member that can’t seem to let go and move on from a relationship that has ended for good. Perhaps you have been that person struggling to accept that it is over.
It IS over. You would be better served by accepting the reality of the situation and moving on with your life. You would be better served to put the focus on yourself and to not continue to focus on someone that more than anything else wants you gone from his or her life.
The temptation to see the current situation through rose-colored glasses exists because it is an attempt to protect the ego. It stings the ego to realize that you have been rejected. It stings the ego to have to come to terms with the fact that this person that you loved no longer has any feelings for you and quite possibly never did. The ego tells you that this person really wants to hear from you. The ego wants you to believe that the other person misses you. The ego wants you to believe that it was just a misunderstanding.
But the rational, more reasonable part of your mind knows better. It speaks to you in a little voice that reminds you that this is how the other person wanted it to be. This little voice naggingly tells you that while this person MAY have cared about you in the past, he or she clearly doesn’t care enough about you now to want you in the picture. You will be better off listening to this rational, more honest voice. You will spare yourself further embarrassment and the emotional damage that comes with embracing a more comfortable lie. And you open yourself up to the possibility of meeting someone else, getting to know someone better that you already know, or getting reacquainted with someone that you already know pretty well that actually wants you in the picture and in his or her life. Spend a little more time listening to that voice.
