The Latest Dungeons & Dragons or D&D Movie

I have read and heard good reviews of the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie and I hope to watch it in the not-too-distant future. I am hoping that it isn’t too farcical for my tastes. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy some movies that don’t take themselves too seriously. I had a female friend in college that stopped letting me recommend the movie for a time after I took her to see This Is Spinal Tap at the campus theater (to be fair, I did also introduce her to the outstanding The Godfather trilogy of films). But I am hoping that this movie is closer in feel to the Schwarzenegger movies about Conan the Barbarian than Monty Python and the Holy Grail (and I love me some Pythons’ silliness). Well, we shall see.

I won’t disagree with the idea that a game of D&D has its moments of silliness (one of my sister-in-laws would likely agree), but most recreational pursuits can seem kind of silly to people that are not enthusiasts. The important thing is whether or not the participants are having a good time. D&D and other tabletop roleplaying games can be a lot of fun, particularly if you are the creative type that can lose himself or herself in a book, a play, a movie, or a song.
