Starting a Solo Journey in the Footprints of Previous Travelers

I have previously shared on this blog my renewed interest in tabletop roleplaying games and my experience to date with solo tabletop roleplaying games. Here in early 2026, I am feeling pretty excited by the prospect of returning to the gaming table on a somewhat consistent basis via both solo gaming and more “traditional” gaming as part of a group, online or in-person.

I expect that I will play the solo “Alone Against the Flames” adventure found within the Call of Cthulhu Starter Set at least once more and I have a handful of additional “Alone Against the…” solo adventure game books for Call of Cthulhu that I am looking forward to playing. Moreover, I recently purchased a copy of the Mythic Game Master Emulator, Second Edition and I have begun reading it in anticipation of using its tools for running more free-form solo games in a variety of settings and genres and utilizing a variety of game systems.

I am feeling more confident with the idea of playing these games solo, in part, because I know that I am not alone in this endeavor. Oh, I will be playing solo, but I am not the first person to tread this path. Others have blazed the trail before me. There are a number of online and written resources available to the aspiring solo player. And countless other people have taken the solo plunge. I can do this!

The videos on solo gaming that I have watched of late are only reinforcing the idea that I can do this and that there really isn’t a way to fail beyond choosing not to play. Below is a link to a video from Jonathan Pritchard of the Rolling Stag YouTube channel that answers some questions of interest to the beginner looking to solo roleplay. It’s an interesting and informative video. Being that he is a mentalist (https://www.stagrpg.com/about/), I particularly enjoyed his take on the way that magic works in some fantasy tabletop roleplaying games. If you’re looking for encouragement to get into this growing hobby, I recommend that you take the time to watch the video.
