I am admittedly not the biggest Bill Maher fan. I disagree with him on a variety of political topics, and I expect that I would disagree with him on some other topics. But he does at least seem to be the kind of person with whom you could disagree, even passionately, and still have a beer with afterwards.
While the advice to avoid discussing religion and politics is hardly new advice for avoiding conflict, I would argue wthings didn’t used to be as bad as they are today. I have had friends and girlfriends with whom I disagreed with on matters of politics. I used to enjoy having political discussions with a friend that held opposing views because neither of us forgot the fact that we were indeed friends first and foremost. If someone were to ask me if I had lost any friends over politics, I would be inclined to say “No.” If I lost someone over politics, we were hardly friends.
The friendship between Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was legendary. They held differing opinions and views and yet they chose to enjoy each other’s company and their respective families grew to be close to one another as well. And this happened when both Justice Scalia and Justice Ginsburg were ruling on contentious, weighty matters of law as it relates to the Constitution of the United States.
Anyway, I encourage you to watch a recent Bill Maher video (link below) relating to political disagreements and the upcoming Christmas holiday season, as well as read an article on the friendship between Justice Scalia and Justice Ginsburg (link also below). Just be aware that the video has some decidedly “salty” language that makes it NSFW.
Have a great Thanksgiving Day holiday if you’re celebrating here in the United States and have a happy, healthy, and safe 2024 holiday season.
