“Peanut Butter Conspiracy” (Jimmy Buffett)

Let me try and put myself in the shoes of this hypothetically desperate and hungry man.
“Should I attempt to shoplift a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter from a grocery store or a convenience store or should I instead break into an occupied dwelling whose inhabitants might be heavily armed to steal their food?”
Dude, you are likely to get shot before you have a chance to launch into your sob story and your tales of woe. Breaking into an occupied dwelling where the occupants are quite possibly armed with one or more firearms is not something to be contemplated lightly. Quite simply, that is a really good way to get yourself shot full of holes. A person’s home is his or her castle. It’s his or her sanctuary and safe harbor. People get understandably angry and frightened when people that they don’t know choose to enter uninvited and intrude upon their sense of safety and security.
Why not steal from a grocery store, a food pantry, or a restaurant? Why choose instead to break into an occupied dwelling where the inhabitants are possibly armed? Let’s be intellectually honest here. I think that it’s safe to say that most burglars and home invaders are not looking to score bread and peanut butter. Or ramen noodles. Or filet mignon and lobster.
This hypothetical (and arguably disingenuous and intellectually dishonest) scenario posed above got me thinking about Jimmy Buffett’s “Peanut Butter Conspiracy.” It is a tale about shoplifting, not a burglary or a home invasion. Frankly, I think most people would seek public assistance or charity before they would resort to shoplifting or breaking and entering and burglary.
