One great thing about being a professional truck driver is having time to think. Don’t get it twisted. Driving a truck requires that you be focused on the task at hand. That is particularly true when dealing with inclement weather and heavy traffic.

But the job does afford you some time, particularly on a dark lonely road out in the middle of nowhere, to think and to ponder the world and your place in it. Before I had a problem with my iPad (which has been resolved), I had been reading a few books on the various apps. One book is about stand-up comedy and writing comedy. I have only gotten through the first couple chapters, but it encourages the reader to get into the habit of writing daily. While I haven’t been diligent in this, I have been making notes of things that strike me funny or that seem to be fertile ground for humor.

Last week I had some promising ideas for a blog post. Nothing particularly funny. Just observations and thoughts stemming from the observations. Unfortunately, I didn’t write down these thoughts and they are now lost to the ether. Perhaps these ideas will revisit me spontaneously or as the result of having my memory jogged by something. Regardless, it certainly isn’t worth getting upset. It isn’t as though I had forgotten the cure for cancer or the ultimate formula for a new and improved Coca-Cola.

I certainly had some downtime when I could have made notes to my iPhone. I even had some long periods waiting for a trailer to be loaded in which I considered writing on my iPad. The opportunity though to get some extra sleep ultimately won the moment.

Like all of us, I need to find and strike a balance. I need to get more disciplined and recommit to getting adequate exercise. I need to get my sleep. And I need to commit to reading and writing.

Life gets in the way. It always does. We all have to find a way to make things happen. We all have the same twenty-four hours in a day. Excuses won’t cut it. You can have lapses, but you don’t want to make a habit of wasting time. At 52 years of age, I really shouldn’t. 🙂
