Making a Getaway

Last week, I took advantage of my “weekend” to travel up to Galena, Illinois (https://www.visitgalena.org/) for a couple days/nights of R&R. I have made a number of day trips to Galena and I have spent a number of pleasant days and nights there. Ulysses S. Grant lived in Galena prior to the American Civil War and he returned to Galena after it ended and prior to his becoming the President of the United States. Galena is noteworthy for being the home of nine men including Grant that served as generals during the American Civil War. It is a charming community with historic buildings and spectacular views and scenery. I have enjoyed my visits there.

In addition to Galena, since moving to Illinois I have made multiple visits to Chicago and the Chicagoland area, as well as to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. When I lived in North Carolina, I had a handful of favorite places that I visited multiple times. While I enjoy visiting new locations like Door County, Wisconsin and seeing new things, it is nice to have one or more familiar locations in relatively close proximity to home to which one can get away for a few days.

Of course, quite a few people have a vacation cabin, condo, cottage, home, or trailer to which they flee the demands and pressures of daily living. Others may own a boat or recreational vehicle that serves as a home away from home. Myself, while I sometimes stay at the same hotel or resort for these short getaways, I enjoy being able to go with the best, most affordable option available at the time. Sometimes I am interested in pet-friendly accommodations. Other times the trip is geared towards two-legged guests.

I don’t know that I will be doing another overnight getaway before the new year, but who knows? It is nice to get out of town even if it is only for the day. If you enjoy such day trips or short overnight trips, I strongly encourage you to visit a favorite place or to explore a bit and find a new favorite place to which you can get away. And Galena is a great place to visit even if it isn’t just down the road for you. Happy and safe travels, my friends.
