Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twain

I have lived in a county that borders the Mississippi River since the summer of 2017. For a time I worked across the Mississippi River in Clinton, Iowa. My duties as a professional driver occasionally take me across the “mighty Mississippi.” But I am by no means a riverman.

Mark Twain WAS a riverman and a number of his works feature aspects of life on and along the Mississippi River. Life on the Mississippi is one such work that takes advantage of his experiences on and along this great American body of water. While I have read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and saw the play Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while I was a student at East Carolina University, I haven’t read this particular work by Mr. Twain. Perhaps it is time to do so (in addition to rereading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer).

I have once made a delivery in Twain’s boyhood home of Hannibal, Missouri. I have on a few occasions driven through Missouri going from parts of Iowa to parts of Illinois. I should take a day or two and pay a visit to Hannibal.
