“Kentucky Rain” (Elvis Presley)

I have always loved this song and the imagery of a desperate, heartbroken man trying to find the woman that left home without a word of explanation. Having trudged through a cold rain to get to where I was going and having experienced heartbreak, I feel that I can appreciate the plight of such a man trudging through a cold, driving rain in waterlogged clothes and socks along a Kentucky backroad.

With that being said, I remember hearing this song somewhat recently and thinking that perhaps she left because Elvis didn't have a car or because the couple only had one car and she was wanted a man with his own car or truck. As someone that, at times while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree didn't own an automobile, I am intimately familiar with the difficulties posed when you don't have an automobile and you don't live in an urban environment with adequate public transportation options. Fair or not, you may be seen as a "Scrub" if you don't own a car (perhaps having chosen to sell the one that you had).

Anyway, that sudden revelation gave me a good chuckle while listening to this song that I have long enjoyed.
