It Could Have Been Worse (A Close Call)

This morning just after midnight, I hit a deer on the way into work. A big deer. It took the driver's side mirror off my car. It could have been so much worse.

Sadly, it was pretty bad for the deer. It was left injured at the side of the road and a law enforcement officer ended up putting it down. I escaped without injury. Pretty good result considering that the driver behind me told me that he stopped to check on me because he was afraid that it might have come through the windshield.

I am not looking forward to the aggravation associated with getting the mirror replaced. But I could have been looking at a major repair or even a totaled automobile. I could have ended up in an emergency room, a trauma center, or a cemetery. The accident occurred by the slightest of margins. I think about how just a few inches or a few seconds difference could have resulted in no accident whatsoever or a catastrophic accident. I wish that I could have been more agile, quicker, and/or luckier. But I have to admit that I was pretty lucky to come out of this encounter without injury or major property damage. And I am feeling very fortunate.
