Is There Love Out There?

This is a really sweet thought, but I have to consider the fact that it ended on this planet. I would have to consider that, as awful as it may have ended, that may have been about as well as things possibly could've ended between us. If a happy ending is a possibility on this distant planet of alternate endings, it stands to reason that other, sadder possibilities exist too.

Perhaps on that other planet her doppelgänger had my doppelgänger maliciously served with a restraining order and unfairly damaged his reputation. Perhaps she married him only to later divorce him and take half of what little he had. Perhaps she had him framed for a crime that he didn't commit. Perhaps she had him beaten up by an ex-boyfriend, an ex-husband, or her current beau. Perhaps she solicited a hitman to execute him in cold blood. Perhaps she shot him or stabbed him to death as he slept. Perhaps she set the apartment/condominium/house on fire with him in it. Perhaps she just found a different way of demonstrating to him that she didn't love him, that she had no genuine feelings of affection for him, and she calmly, dispassionately broke his heart.

Maybe on this distant world her doppelgänger and my doppelgänger love one another passionately and truly. Perhaps they found a way to make a romantic relationship work. Perhaps the love and affection between them never died. Perhaps they are each other's best friend and closest companion. That is indeed a pleasant thought. But it doesn't really make much of a difference in my here and now. She doesn't love me. She is no longer a part of my life. It doubtless could have ended even worse than it did. I suppose that I should be grateful for that small mercy and that the relationship's demise freed us both up to love other people. I guess that I am. Life IS good. The idea of our doubles living in love is a sweet dream. But it is almost certainly a dream. Eventually you must wake to reality and the possibilities of the day.
