I want ROOM SERVICE! I want the club sandwich, I want the cold Mexican beer, I want a $10,000-a-night hooker! I want my shirts laundered... like they do... at the Imperial Hotel... in Tokyo. — Keanu Reeves as Johnny in Johnny Mnemonic
I briefly considered making the title of this blog post “I Want a $10,000-a-Night Hooker!” But I have never been with a “…$10,000-a-night hooker.” I’ve had room service, as well as “…the club sandwich…” and “…the cold Mexican beer….” Besides, most people that remember Johnny Mnemonic and the impassioned rant by Keanu’s title character likely remember it as the “room service” rant.
While tumbling down the rabbit hole that is YouTube, I watched some entertaining videos from the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel. As someone that liked Johnny Mnemonic before it became a cult classic and was converted by the director into a black-and-white film to fit the director’s original vision, I had to click on the Johnny Mnemonic video. I wasn’t disappointed. The video is informative, entertaining, and offers up some insights into the making of the film, its influence, and its transition to a cult classic. It also referenced the impassioned “room service” rant borne of Johnny’s frustration with his situation.
I have liked cyberpunk fiction from the moment that I was first exposed to it. I have posted a handful of times to this blog on cyberpunk fiction and games. As I mentioned before, I liked Johnny Mnemonic. I didn’t realize that the director had converted the film to black-and-white. I’m definitely going to have to watch that version.
