A Cyberpunk Journey

I was formally introduced to cyberpunk as a subgenre in a class on science fiction at East Carolina University. Before that, I had first watched Blade Runner one quiet weekend afternoon in a library media room at Atlantic Christian College. It was on a list of recommended movies. To say that I was blown away would be an understatement. It is still one of my favorite films of all time.

I have read a few cyberpunk works (including William Gibson’s Neuromancer which was assigned reading in the science fiction class) and seen a few cyberpunk movies. I have even explored the seedy, shadowy, and often bloody streets of Night City in the tabletop roleplaying game, Cyberpunk 2020. While I would not consider myself a true aficionado, I am definitely a fan.

I came across these documentary videos (links below) and decided to share. As someone that was around for the birth of cyberpunk and that has witnessed its development over time, the videos were like stepping into a time machine and taking a guided tour which ultimately wound its way back to the present day. Whether you consider yourself a cyberpunk fan or not, you may enjoy this glimpse into the subgenre that some might consider a legitimate genre in its own right.
