Good Night, Murph.

I have lived for a little over 52 years. I have slept on the floor, on cots, on couches, in foldout sofa beds, on a futon, in sleeping bags in tents, in beds of all sizes including bunk beds and waterbeds, and in a North Carolina pine forest one dark, hot, humid, mosquito-plagued night on the ground wrapped in a poncho. But until yesterday, I had never slept in a Murphy bed. How is that even possible?

Murphy beds have long been used to comic effect in comedy shorts, in television shows, and in movies with people being trapped within the bed when it is deliberately or accidentally returned to the stored position against or within the wall. People have sadly also been injured due to defective or improperly installed Murphy beds. But Murphy beds can be a very practical way to create a functional sleeping space in a studio apartment or hotel room. And if you haven’t slept in a Murphy bed before, it is somewhat of a novelty.

I guess that I can now check “sleeping in a Murphy bed” off my list of life experiences. I am just somewhat amazed that it took so long.
