Getting to Know the “Master of the Macabre”

Edgar Allan Poe. Poet. Writer of short stories. Literary critic. Creator of the detective story. Science fiction author. Horror story author extraordinaire. A truly fascinating man that experienced many painful defeats and tragic losses that influenced his writing. He was and is an American literary icon.
Last October around Halloween, I watched Poe: In His Own Words: An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe (https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B01LQI205C/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r) starring Travis Rhett Wilson in the one-man production. It was very good. It is currently available on Amazon Prime. If you’re a fan of Poe’s work or want to know more about this icon of American literature, I highly encourage you to take some time out of your day or night and watch it.
I have visited the Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia (https://poemuseum.org/) a handful of times. The Enchanted Garden with its resident cats, Edgar and Pluto, is a nice, momentary respite from one’s day-to-day cares and its Poe shrine is a nice tribute to the former resident of Richmond. The museum, while relatively small, is worth one’s time. I definitely recommend a visit if you have an interest in Poe and you happen to be or plan to be in the Richmond area.
In addition to the previously mentioned show and the museum, there are a number of interesting documentaries about the man. I have included links to a few below.
I considered posting this in October to coincide with Halloween, but my recent post about H. P. Lovecraft persuaded me to just go ahead and post this now. After all, Lovecraft was a fan of Poe’s work and reportedly visited his shrine in Richmond. And perhaps this post will inspire someone to give Poe’s works a look in time for Halloween. 🐦⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛🎃👻💀😃
