Experience the History of Fort Fisher or the “Gibraltar of the South” in Person
I have previously posted about the two assaults upon the Confederate stronghold of Fort Fisher in the winter of 1864-1865 and its fall during the second battle (https://www.apirateontheprairie.com/post/the-fall-of-fort-fisher). The State of North Carolina has finished construction on the new visitor center and, from the photos that I have seen, it looks fantastic. Quite an improvement from the original visitor center where I previously worked. That is not the only big news.
In keeping with the practice of commemorating Fort Fisher’s place in history each January, the historic site is hosting the 160th Anniversary Commemoration on January 18, 2025. For the student of American history, particularly American Civil War/American military history buffs, this event is a lot of fun with a number of demonstrations and the opportunity to hear from and speak with historians and authors familiar with Fort Fisher, the American Civil War, and the two battles. If you are such an American Civil War/American military history enthusiast, you won’t want to miss this.
