An Early Patriot Victory in America’s War for Independence

The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge was fought on February 27, 1776 and was an early victory for the Patriot cause. "In the Most Furious Manner" is a short video shown in the visitor center at Moores Creek National Battlefield that tells the story of the short, but sharp fighting that derailed early Loyalist attempts to control North Carolina for King George the Third. It is notable for being the last recorded charge by Scottish Highlanders wielding their traditional broadswords.

In the early morning hours of February 27, 1776, Loyalist forces charged across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge. Beyond the bridge, nearly 1,000 North Carolina Patriots waited quietly with cannons and muskets poised to fire. This battle marked the last broadsword charge by Scottish Highlanders and the first significant victory for the Patriots in the American Revolution.
