A Significant Skirmish in the Battle of the Sexes
Updated: Aug 9, 2025
Pat Benatar famously sang “Love Is a Battlefield” and Billie Jean King faced off with and defeated Bobby Riggs in tennis' “Battle of the Sexes” match. But one of the most significant skirmishes in the seemingly never-ending war between men and women took place in a soul food restaurant on the South Side of Chicago famous for serving up "The best damn chicken in the state." It was there that a man, one Matt "Guitar" Murphy, stood up to his woman and famously declared that, "I love you, but I'm the man and you are the woman and I'll make the decisions concerning my life." After a little song and dance, Matt "Guitar" Murphy and "Blue Lou" Marini were once more free to make music as part of one of the most famous rhythm and blues bands that the world has ever known, The Blues Brothers.
