A Historic Defeat

The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. A historic, monumental battle that shaped the Roman Empire and changed world history. A battle that shook the confidence of the greatest military power of its day and thus shaped the destiny of Europe and the world.

I read about this battle when I was much younger and only recently returned to it as a student of history. As often happens when I am exploring or just playing about online, I found myself tumbling down the rabbit hole and going off on a tangent. It started off with a glance at some materials for an upcoming roleplaying game set during the days of the Roman Empire. Modiphius Entertainment is coming out with COHORS CTHULHU (https://www.modiphius.net/pages/cohors-cthulhu), a game that incorporates elements of Lovecraftian cosmic horror. The accompanying fiction is pretty interesting. I don't know if I will purchase the game materials, but it definitely got me thinking.

I considered the fact that the troops of the Roman Army doubtless found themselves in some pretty horrifying scenarios that didn't involve the occult or creatures that transcended reality as they understood it. Facing barbarians far from home was doubtless a fearsome possibility, even for the soldiers of the mighty Roman war machine. I remembered this Roman defeat and started digging.

Rome lost three of her prized, vaunted legions in this battle. To put it mildly, Rome was "shaken" by this defeat. Caesar Augustus , as evidenced by the quote above, was distraught. While Rome would eventually send its army out on a mission of retribution, it was a serious blow to Roman prestige and ambitions.
