“You Can Do Magic” (America)

The Cliff Beats Classics YouTube channel recently posted a video sharing the music video for this classic song by America and I was reminded of the magic of the song, its lyrics, and its sound. It moved Cliff’s partner, Karen, to tears. That’s the power of music and the magic of love. But I would also argue that, if there is good magic, there is undoubtedly bad magic. Or perhaps it would be a more accurate or reasonable statement to suggest that the magic itself is neutral and can be used for good or bad purposes depending upon the intentions of the person casting the spell.

In a previous post, “‘Better Man, Better Off’ (Tracy Lawrence)” (https://www.apirateontheprairie.com/post/better-man-better-off-tracy-lawrence), I mentioned an occasion where I jokingly suggested that someone from my past might be a witch given the hold that she had over me and my heart. We all can likely think of an instance where someone used his or her physical beauty and charms to manipulate someone that was smitten and got that person to do his or her bidding. Likewise, we can all likely think of an occasion where love redeemed someone or saved someone from a life or a moment of cynicism and despair. Perhaps we have a personal story of just such a redemption or rescue.

I am reminded of a young woman that came into my life and stayed in my life for many seasons and that significantly calmed my own sometimes angry spirit, inner demons, and cynicism as it related to romantic love. I believed in love before we met, but I don’t believe that I had ever been in love with someone else at the same time that the object of my affection was also openly and unabashedly in love with me. That love certainly felt magical in the moment.
