“You Broke Me First” (Conor Maynard)

When I first heard this song, it reminded me of a blog post that I wrote for one of my old blogs. Namely, it reminded me of the blog post that I wrote in late 2019 regarding the Adele song, “Hello.” In addition to posting a link to the music video, I posted the fictitious response of a fictional former beau of Adele upon hearing of her suggestion in the song that they meet years after the breakup because she evidently hasn't gotten over it. It was an attempt at humor. What can I say? It gave me a chuckle. 😆

I imagined that the relationship had ended badly, that Adele had initiated the breakup, and that she had rejected requests from her former beau to get together to talk. Adele's former beau was more than a little embittered by the way that the relationship had ended and how Adele had avoided having a potentially uncomfortable conversation with him. So while he doesn't explicitly deny her request to get together and talk, he does mock the idea of her now wanting to have a conversation that he quite reasonably believes should have taken place years earlier. Clearly, the way that the relationship ended was emotionally traumatic for Adele's fictional ex and he feels as though she was unnecessarily hurtful back then. Her desire to now revisit the past and have a conversation seems to him to be borne more of selfishness on her part than any concern for his emotional well-being. In my imagining of this fictional confrontation, Adele's ex calls her on it.

This song, "You Broke Me First", is focused upon the thoughts and the emotions of a person that has been dumped and that is later contacted by his or her estranged former love interest. I expect that many people can relate to the lyrics.
