Most everyone in our modern, technological, connected world has heard of Dungeons & Dragons or D&D/DnD. That is true even though many people have yet to play the game and might only have a vague idea of what the game is and how the game and other tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) are played.

I, myself, have played earlier versions of Dungeons & Dragons and I have played a handful of other tabletop roleplaying games. I haven't played Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition yet, although I know people that have. As I have mentioned in previous posts to my blog, I have been thinking of returning to the gaming table as a participant after collecting many TTRPG books, box sets, and accessories over the past few years. For me, the biggest challenge is picking a game from the myriad available games on the market now. With the Internet and online platforms dedicated to online play of these games, finding people with whom to play in my small community in rural Northern Illinois is not an insurmountable hurdle. Neither is finding people that can play on the nights that I am available. And yet even with the variety of genres and settings available to today's players and me leaning towards another game/system, I wouldn't be surprised if my return to the gaming table has me playing the latest version of the first TTRPG that I ever played.

So why is Dungeons & Dragons the undisputed king of the tabletop roleplaying game hill? Professor Dungeonmaster of Dungeon Craft breaks it down in this relatively short video (11:22).
