Halloween is right around the corner and scary movies and stories are part of the fun. The films and other works set in the universe of the Alien franchise are some of my favorite scary thrill rides.
There have been a number of creative works of fiction that include aspects of the Alien universe. There have been comics, short stories, short films, full-length films, video games, and pieces of art. Some of these works are commercial products, while others are fan fiction. But in the world of Alien and its iconic xenomorphs, what is canonical? What is "official"? If this question is one that you find yourself asking, you are in luck. That is because Andrew E. C. Gaska, the franchise consultant to 20th Century Fox on the Alien franchise, has provided the definitive answer. In addition to that particular role, he has also served as the lead writer and canon consultant on ALIEN: The Roleplaying Game by Free League Publishing (https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/store/?collection_id=133130387504). So while you are certainly free to enjoy whatever creative works that incorporate the xenomorphs and other elements of the Alien universe, if you want to know what is "official" in the eyes of the entity that holds the rights to the intellectual property of the Alien universe, now you can find out the answer (see link below).
I, for one, intend to rewatch the first three movies in the Alien universe and the two prequels in the days leading up to Halloween 2022. All of these are considered canonical. And while the alien hunters from the Predator and the Alien vs. Predator universes are not considered to be an official part of the Alien universe, I may watch the first couple movies in that universe, Predator and Predator 2 as well.
