Watch Out for the School Buses and the Schoolchildren

All across the United States, schoolchildren are back in school or will soon be back in school. I came across a recent post from the North Carolina Justice Academy’s Facebook account emphasizing the importance of stopping as legally required for stopped school buses. The North Carolina Justice Academy post also highlighted the various scenarios a driver may face and outlined whether or not you are legally required to stop.

I have posted screenshots below highlighting the requirements and the various scenarios for both North Carolina and Illinois. I have also posted links to that information for both of those states. In addition, I have posted links to the legal requirements for Iowa and Wisconsin, two other states in which I regularly drive.

Do you know when and where you are required to stop for a stopped school bus? Be aware that the rules may be slightly different in the state or states in which you ordinarily drive. Moreover, be aware that it may be necessary to stop, regardless of whether or not you are legally required to stop for a stopped school bus, to avoid hitting a young person that has momentarily forgotten to look before crossing or entering the roadway. Drive safely, stay alert for the presence of young people, and keep an eye out for those school buses.
