“The enemy gets a vote” is a truism that is in the minds of wise military strategists and tacticians, as well as those that make plans and that recognize that even the best laid plans can be influenced by others and by external factors. A similar truism applies to relationships. While not all relationships involve or result in an adversary or an enemy, the other “side” has a say in how a relationship will develop, progress, and possibly deteriorate and ultimately end.
You can want a relationship to last. You can want a relationship that is ending to end amicably and with no hard feelings. You can want to end a relationship in a way that will leave you with fond memories. While your actions and words will have an effect on the relationship, your actions and words alone will not determine the success of a relationship and if and how it will end. You do what you can and that is all that you can do. The other party gets a vote too.
