The Little Black Gun, the Detractors, the Hatred, and the Lies

I have wanted to keep my blog free from political arguments, but I am sick and tired of seeing good Americans whose only “crimes” are owning AR-15s and supporting the right of Americans to own such a firearm being maligned as callous, uncaring, unfeeling monsters that are somehow complicit when a firearm is used in a criminal manner to murder, maim, and injure the innocent. And I am concerned with the calls to ban a firearm that is so well-suited to the security needs of everyday, law-abiding Americans when it is abundantly clear that monsters walk among us.
Every time that there is a high-profile shooting involving a so-called “assault weapon”, I see multiple firearms and self-defense pseudo-experts boldly proclaim that, “Nobody needs an AR-15!” They often contend that no one has ever given them a single reason why anyone but a criminal or a terrorist would want one. The fact is that the people trying to paint the AR-15 as a “military-grade weapon of war” that has no business being in the hands of reasonable, practical, law-abiding Americans are victims of disinformation and/or misinformation. Or they are deliberately promulgating disinformation.
I have personally posted multiple articles and videos on social media platforms which clearly explain exactly why a law-abiding American would choose to own an AR-15. I do this to point out that multiple, actual experts hold the opinion that the AR-15 is a sensible choice, particularly for self-defense/home defense. Now keep in mind that this isn’t hidden information. Nobody is hiding this information and countless other gun owners and gun rights supporters have shared this information. Still we get told that there is no reason for a law-abiding American to own an AR-15.
If my home was invaded by five machete-wielding thugs, I would prefer that me and my loved ones had to clean up their blood and not my own and that of my dog (https://t.co/i0LCGfQHMN). I would want the most capable firearm legally available to civilians. It is tough to argue that the AR-15 isn’t a contender for such a title. And semiautomatic firearms have been owned by Americans for over a century.
Unlike Joe “Shoot ‘Em In the Leg” Biden, Massad Ayoob is a recognized expert (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massad_Ayoob). If you are truly interested in why the AR-15 is so popular, watch his two videos on the practicality and utility of the AR-15 in the self-defense/home defense role (see links below). But multiple experts concur (see links below) and millions of Americans have listened and purchased their own AR-15s. I, myself, once told a firearms instructor that I didn’t believe that the AR-15 was a particularly good choice for a firearm to protect myself, those that I love, and my home. The instructor patiently explained why I was mistaken. Because I wasn’t emotionally invested in my position, I was able to evaluate his remarks and subsequently change my position.

For the record, the AR-15 and AR platform carbines and rifles ARE used for hunting, despite what the pseudo-experts say on the topic. And no, the .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO cartridges fired from the AR-15 do not destroy the meat or obliterate the animal (see the links below).

And yes, the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge is used by the military on the battlefield. But so are the 9mm cartridges that Joe Biden laughably claimed “blows the lung out of the body." So are 12 gauge shotgun shells. The AR-15 is chambered to fire an intermediate powered cartridge. The M1 Garand fires the more powerful .30-06 Springfield cartridge that has been in civilian use for decades. The M1 Garand is a semiautomatic, clip-fed, actual “weapon of war.” It has been an available to Americans like one Senator John F. Kennedy and it is a very formidable weapon. Don’t believe me? And let’s be clear about the term “military grade.” It is a pretty meaningless term in the conversation about firearms available to civilians and it is fairly ridiculous when applied to the semiautomatic AR-15 (see link below).

Clearly, the AR-15 has its place in the personal armory of American civilians. It is a popular for a reason (beyond it looking bad-ass and intimidating). Now compare that with the tripe about firearms, self-defense, and home defense that so profusely and effortlessly flows from the mouth of America’s most prominent and most powerful would-be gun-grabber, President Joe Biden (see links below). Just keep in mind that following his advice could result in you being arrested, tried in a court of law, incarcerated, raped, robbed, injured, maimed, or killed.

Gun owners know that Joe Biden and those mindlessly parroting his talking points and insisting that nobody needs an AR-15 and that they serve no lawful purpose don’t know what they are talking about when it comes to firearms and self-defense/home defense. And while outraged at the idea of those people pushing to outlaw and perhaps confiscate the millions of those firearms in civilian ownership, they manage to laugh and poke some well-deserved fun at his patently ridiculous comments.
It could be argued that many of the people pushing for more common sense” gun control (we already have hundreds of gun laws at the federal level and more than a thousand gun laws at the state and local levels) are the ones that really don’t care about protecting children, because they are unwilling to discuss potential solutions that don’t involve gun control, like hardening schools against attacks. That is almost certainly not charitable or fair given that many undoubtedly do care, but have been misinformed and led to believe that gun control is the only option. But then again, many of those same people are not the least bit reluctant to call gun owners, gun rights supporters, and those representing gun rights organizations “murderers” and “terrorists.” If you look at the picture above showing the callousness and sheer hatred directed at gun rights supporters and gun rights politicians, you should be able to grasp why gun owners would be reasonably reluctant to surrender a single firearm, magazine or cartridge. We can discuss ways to address the relatively recent scourge of school shootings, but vilifying gun owners, gun rights supporters, and gun rights politicians isn't helpful. Neither is lying about the suitability of the AR-15 for lawful purposes by law-abiding Americans.
