The Bloody Hürtgen Forest

The Battle of Hürtgen Forest is perhaps the largest, longest, bloodiest battle fought by American troops that relatively few Americans have ever heard or read about in learning about their nation's military history. It was eclipsed in the American consciousness by the subsequent Battle of the Bulge that began on December 16, 1944. Yet the accounts that I have read and heard about the prolonged battle tell a story of a fight in the Hürtgen Forest that was marked by its sheer ferocity, its close fighting carried out in shadows or darkness under a thick forest canopy, its sudden encounters with the enemy, the small gains and losses accompanied by heavy casualties, futility, and even one "monumental" instance of compassion and courage towards one's enemy.
Units like the 101st Airborne Division and its famed "Band of Brothers" undoubtedly deserved high praise for their actions in stopping the massive German offensive in the Ardennes Forest that became known as the Battle of the Bulge. It just strikes me as a shame and a travesty that this battle is not as well-known to Americans as D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, the battle for Guadalcanal, and the taking of Iwo Jima. But the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest is widely viewed as a defeat for the American forces that fought there, so perhaps that is inevitable. To my knowledge, "Remember Hürtgen Forest" never became a battle cry or rallying cry like "Remember the Alamo" or "Remember Pearl Harbor" did.
