Some Solo Gaming Advice and Recommendations

In a number of posts on this blog, I have announced my intention to play tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs). That includes my intention to play at least some of the time without a group as a solo participant. I recently came across a couple of videos on solo TTRPG play published by Servant of Shiloh of the RPG Elite (@RPGElite) YouTube channel. If you have checked out my blog before, you may have come across a previous post where I shared a link to a video by Servant. The post was titled “Black People and Tabletop Roleplaying Games (https://www.apirateontheprairie.com/post/black-people-and-tabletop-roleplaying-games-ttrpgs). Anyway, I found these videos on solo play to be informative and insightful. I decided to share them with anyone that is interested (or that might become interested) in playing TTRPGs as a solo participant.

Servant makes some recommendations on specific games/game systems with which to start and he makes recommendations on how to have the best possible experience when playing solo. I have to say that I found his advice, to start with solo play if you are interested in playing TTRPGs for the first time, to be intriguing advice. I found that particular piece of advice to be intriguing because many of us learned to play these kind of games by joining a group that was already familiar with a particular game or by learning how a particular game is played from a friend or family member that was at least somewhat familiar with the game.

As for the games/game systems that he recommends, I feel pretty good knowing that I have three of his five recommendations. With that being said, he has his personal preferences, likes, and dislikes, as do I. Servant and I are both fans of superhero comics and fiction. If you are not a fan of superhero comics and fiction, you probably won’t be very excited by the prospect of roleplaying as a superhero. You will be pleased to know that two of his recommendations allow you to play in a variety of genres, so you are not limited by his preferred genres (nor mine).
