Maybe It’s a Southern Thing?

Below is a recipe for snow cream from the folks at Southern Living. I seem to recall my mother that grew up in Eastern Kentucky mentioning snow cream, but I can’t say that I have ever had it. I recently came across the recipe and was thinking that perhaps here, in wintery Northern Illinois where the snow was falling today, I should try it. But when I mentioned it, I was greeted with more than a little curiosity and skepticism? I was asked why not just buy some ice cream. Admittedly, I was kind of stuck. Nostalgia for a treat that I had never enjoyed? A yearning for a historical connection with my mother and other family members, as well as previous generations of Americans that have enjoyed this rare treat? Curiosity? All of the above I suppose, although I must admit that I did think about just driving to the grocery store and picking up a half-gallon of chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, or rocky road ice cream now that I was thinking about ice cream. Maybe it’s more of a Southern thing? I may have to ask around to get a better idea.
I understand the concerns about atmospheric contamination of the snow and therefore the snow cream (me playfully pointing out the sage advice to avoid the yellow snow was greeted with a “No shit” expression and a similar comment). I pointed out that one wouldn’t collect the first snow to fall and that I would use a clean container to capture the snow rather than collecting it from a convenient surface. I evidently wasn’t convincing. Of course, I am free to take part in this little taste of Americana culinary experiment. But it appears that I may be trying snow cream alone should I decide to give it a try this winter. If I do, I will relay my findings.
Now you on the other hand may remember snow cream fondly or you may be eager to try it. So, as I mentioned earlier, below is a recipe if you need one. If you have the necessary snow and you do decide to try it, I hope that you enjoy it. ⛄️ ❄️ 🍨 😋
