How Do YOU Play the (Tabletop Roleplaying) Game?

In his latest video, Professor DM of the Dungeon Craft YouTube channel details the two distinct types of players that you are likely to find in a D&D game (or really practically any tabletop roleplaying game or TTRPG). This is great information for the Dungeon Master (DM), Game Master (GM), or the person holding whatever title is given to the player that is running a particular game for the players and their respective player characters or PCs. But it is also information that a player playing a player character might find useful so as to better understand his or her playing style and the kinds of games that he or she is likely to prefer.

A “theatre kid” MIGHT prefer playing in a style that emphasizes staying true to the beliefs, desires, dreams, fears, goals, motivations, personality, and thoughts of her player character. Then again, she MIGHT be motivated by a desire to masterfully utilize her knowledge of the rules and her intelligent, practical thinking and tactical acumen to “win” the game by crushing whatever obstacles stand between her PC and victory. Neither style of play is “wrong.” However, a game is likely to be more enjoyable for everyone involved if everyone’s respective playing styles are respected and their desires or needs are being met.
