Eggnog, Cherry Bounce, and a Fun Christmas/Winter Holiday Outing

Yes, I know that today is Halloween and that Thanksgiving Day is on the horizon. But Christmas festivities have been on my mind of late and I thought that I would share a fun thing to do during the Christmas/winter holiday season and a couple beverage recipes for your holiday party and celebrations with family and friends. You may particularly enjoy these things if you are a history buff.
So lately I have enjoyed a friendly “war” on Twitter/X regarding eggnog. I, myself, enjoy eggnog, although I usually don’t indulge until after Thanksgiving Day (that is, of course, subject to change). And while it isn’t a uniquely American beverage, it has certainly been enjoyed and served by the earliest Americans including the Father of his Country, George Washington. Below are links to two eggnog recipes, as well as a recipe for cherry bounce. The recipes are courtesy of George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The Washington family served eggnog to their guests and cherry bounce was evidently a favorite of George Washington.

I also recently came across an advertisement on Facebook regarding the upcoming “Winter Glow” event at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. I attended a Christmas function at Mount Vernon years ago and really had a fantastic time. In addition to touring the mansion, I learned about how Christmas was celebrated at Mount Vernon, enjoyed some hot chocolate and hot cider, and met the Christmas camel, Aladdin. Before leaving, my companion and I had a delicious dinner at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. During that weekend, we also explored King Street in Old Town Alexandria and ventured into Washington, DC to see the White House and the Christmas trees including the National Christmas Tree on display at President’s Park.
Should you plan on attending, you should know that preservation work is ongoing and that some rooms in the mansion are off-view and the exhibit on George Washington’s life in the Education Center is closed for renovations (https://www.mountvernon.org/plan-your-visit?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=estate&). But I still think that you are likely to have a great time celebrating the holiday season with a visit.

Sadly, I will probably not be visiting George Washington’s Mount Vernon short of a Christmas miracle or an unexpected change of plans. So drink an additional glass of eggnog and say “Hello” to Aladdin for me. 🎄🎅🤶🐪😁
