I have never been scuba diving. I would love to, but it is generally contraindicated for asthmatics due to the concerns regarding possible barotrauma. It’s a damn shame given that I have long loved the coastal/ocean environment, loved seeing its inhabitants in an aquarium setting, and once had an underwater archaeologist with the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources offer to train me when I was younger. Oh well. What is life without its miscellaneous disappointments, victories, times of mourning, and celebrations? Still pretty damn fine.

I have never used bubbles to reorient myself as a diver, but I am familiar with the concept. The bubbles go up. The bubbles lead to the surface of the water. As a bodysurfer and bodyboarder, the concept still applies. If you get slammed by a wave and you are disoriented, you can just remind yourself to relax and see which way the bubbles lead.

It is hard to believe that Jimmy Buffett is no longer making music, performing at sold-out concerts and smaller venues, and living large except in our memories and the music. But he certainly left us with some great music and some great memories. Below are links to two music videos for “Bubbles Up” and a link to a Lawrence Specker article about the collaboration between Jimmy Buffett and Will Kimbrough on “Bubbles Up.” It is more serious than many Jimmy Buffett tunes. Sometimes we need such serious, yet hopeful tunes and I think that Jimmy Buffett and Will Kimbrough knew that. Enjoy.
