“Right there. Mary Ellen Moffat. She broke my heart.” — Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper in Jaws

“Mary Ellen Moffat. She broke my heart”

Below is a link to another short, interesting video from the Flourish with Laurin YouTube channel. This one touches on the hurt and the emotional “hangover” that follows in the wake of a romantic relationship coming to an end.

I am by no means an authority on these matters aside from my own limited personal experience with breakups and heartbreak. I have my scars and I have been, for a time, one of the “walking wounded” following the demise of a cherished romantic relationship. But I am but one man. I will not presume to speak for other males. With that being said, I will admit that I am inclined to believe that some wounds may never truly heal… at least not without some work.

I have, like other guys, resorted to “wine, women, and song” when my heart has been broken. That includes the pursuit of rebound relationships with new women. I once had a girlfriend break up with me just prior to her flying home to visit with her family. That night I found a woman that took some romantic/sexual interest in me, at least if where she put her hand while we were standing together at the bar was any indication. On another occasion, an ex-girlfriend called me weeks after she had broken up with me to discuss getting back together. This call coming after I had gone home with a woman that I had met at a bar that weekend and having made plans to meet up with her again the following weekend. Emotionally I was arguably not at my best and most confident, but I was still able to flirt and play the game. I may not have been living my best life, but I was still living. I don’t know that these encounters/hookups helped me to heal, but I don’t believe that they hindered my healing either.

Anyway, I would encourage you to watch the short video (click first link below) and give some thought to how you choose to cope with the pain of a breakup. And in addition to the video, I have also included a link to an article by Theresa E. DiDonato, Ph.D, on recovering from a breakup. You might want to give that article a read, particularly if you’re hurting or otherwise struggling in the wake of a breakup..
