Sometimes it seems like more and more so-called “adults” are choosing to abandon expected adult behavior and revert back to childish, immature behaviors in circumstances and situations where you might reasonably expect adult behavior to be modeled. Like dating and relationships.
What is Banksying? I had never heard of the term until I came across a USA Today article on this phenomenon.
Like a baffling Banksy art piece, Banksying in a relationship involves slowly withdrawing emotionally from your partner, without telling them that's what you're doing. When the time comes to finally break up, the Banksy-er often feels better, having mentally checked out of the relationship long ago, while the other partner is left blindsided and confused. — Charles Trepany, reporter
It isn’t exactly something new, I suppose. I expect that plenty of dissatisfied romantic partners throughout human history have emotionally withdrawn from a relationship over time before making an abrupt announcement and beating a hasty retreat. It’s just now that we have a term specifically for such behavior.
As you might expect, such behavior is linked with diminished interpersonal skills and an inability to handle difficult emotions and conversations. Some people are evidently so averse to conflict that rather than talk to a romantic partner they would rather just bail.
