An Observation

I have said this before, but it’s astounding the way some people insist upon turning friends and acquaintances into enemies. Don’t get it twisted. Disagreements and differences of opinion happen. Arguments happen. Relationships end. But sometimes it seems as though people go out of their way to act in an uncaring and callous manner when they have not been treated in a similar manner.
Of course, I can acknowledge that what seems to be abject cruelty may simply be dispassionate indifference to a person’s feelings or conflicting emotions and motivations that are at odds with any concerns for the other person’s feelings and emotional well-being. That is possible and perhaps even likely given that most people are probably not truly evil and cruel.
But sometimes when you are the victim of such apparent cruelty, it can be difficult to acknowledge the possibility that the individual is not deliberately trying to hurt and alienate you. Questions do come to mind.
“Why?“
”Are you deliberately trying to piss me off?”
”What did I do to deserve such treatment?”
“Was I wrong to believe that I meant something to you?”
”Are you TRYING to break my heart?”
I have been on the receiving end of such poor treatment. And I am forced to admit that I too have been guilty of being a little too cavalier with someone else’s feelings. Being treated in an uncaring manner at least has the potential to motivate us to do better in our future interactions with others because we learn how it feels. I guess that could be counted as a positive if we choose to see it that way. I probably should, although I wish that such a lesson didn’t have to be so painful. 😏
