An Early, Modern Mass Shooting

Criminal violence is hardly a new phenomenon. It existed before the invention of firearms and it isn’t likely to end anytime soon. In September 1949, a United States Army veteran that had fought in World War II as an armor crewman named Howard Unruh, went on a violent rampage in Camden, New Jersey. His “Walk of Death” killed thirteen people and resulted in three others being injured. He carried out his shooting spree not with a machine gun, a selective fire assault rifle, or a semiautomatic “assault weapon.” He used a single semiautomatic pistol. While he used a firearm to murder and wound his victims, it should be noted that a member of the community wounded him with a firearm of his own during the rampage.
