A Great Scene in a Movie Showing a Magical New Year’s Eve

I absolutely love the movie, When Harry Met Sally…, and I tend to think about it around New Year’s Eve when I sometimes watch it yet again. If you haven’t seen it (WHAT?!), you should. It is a romantic comedy and one of the best in that genre.

Harry and Sally meet right after graduation from the University of Chicago, part, meet again, part again, meet yet again, become friends, and over time fall in love. The path to true love doesn’t go smoothly, of course, but the movie has a happy ending. As someone that generally considers himself a hopeless romantic and fairly optimistic, I love a happy ending in a movie focusing on love and friendship.

But I have to admit that I am probably more jaded and “battle-scarred” than I was when I first watched the movie decades ago in the movie theater. Don’t get it twisted. I have been guilty on multiple occasions of wearing my heart on my sleeve. I DO believe in love (although I absolutely love the Queensrÿche song “I Don’t Believe in Love”). I love women and the vast majority of my experiences have been positive, even if the overwhelming majority of these relationships ultimately ended. I just have had some negative experiences and sometimes I fully expect the other shoe to drop.

Harry’s desperate gesture and his professing of his love is touching and heartfelt. He is committed to his attempt to win over Sally and he is vulnerable. I know how the scene concludes and how the movie ends. But I almost expect for Sally to tell him off, to walk away, and to perhaps tell him to lose her phone number after humiliating him in some fashion. I’m only half-kidding.
