A Field of Dreams in Newport, Rhode Island
If I lived in Newport, Rhode Island or in the immediate vicinity, I would be more or less compelled to try and join a team in the George S. Donnelly Sunset League for at least one season so that I could play at historic Cardines Field. After all, I am not going to be offered a roster spot with the ballpark’s resident Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Newport has a long association with the game of baseball. And Cardines Field has witnessed a fair share of that history (click on the links below for more regarding that history).

In a couple of weekends, the United States Army will be taking on the United States Navy in the 7th Annual Cardines Classic (https://nwcfoundation.org/events/7th-annual-cardines-classic/). The game is a tribute to the military baseball teams that played during World War I and to the city’s connection with the United States military. Both teams will be playing in vintage uniforms of the period. While I have yet to attend a Newport Gulls game and I will not be in town for the 7th Annual Cardines Classic, perhaps I will be in town for the 8th Annual Cardines Classic or a future Newport Gulls home game. I certainly hope so.
